The passing score is 63 out of 90 overall. Results are graded as Pass (63+), Marginal Fail (58–62.5), or Clear Fail (below 58). Critically, you must also meet the minimum per-dialogue score — a total of 63+ is not enough if you score below 29 in either individual dialogue.

You must score at least 29 out of 45 in each individual dialogue, regardless of your overall total. For example, scoring 23 in Dialogue 1 and 41 in Dialogue 2 (total: 64) still results in a Clear Fail. Most coaches recommend targeting at least 32 per dialogue to give yourself a safe buffer.

The CCL uses a deduction-based system — you begin with full marks (45 per dialogue) and marks are subtracted for every error you make. There are no bonus points for performing well; your entire goal is to preserve your starting score through accurate, complete interpretation. Deductions are triggered by omissions (leaving out information), additions (adding content not in the original), inaccuracies (wrong meaning), wrong register (e.g. too formal or too casual), and requesting more than one segment repetition per dialogue. CCL results issued after 9 August 2022 are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Results issued before that date carry only a 3-year validity and NAATI cannot extend them — you must resit.
