What is the NAATI CCL Test?
The NAATI CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test is administered by NAATI — the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. It assesses your ability to interpret consecutive spoken dialogue between English and a community language such as Chinese. Passing the CCL test earns you 5 bonus points toward Australian Permanent Residency under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Test Format
The CCL test consists of two dialogues, each approximately 300 words long and divided into around 12 segments. Each segment contains a maximum of 35 words. Segments alternate between English and LOTE (Language Other Than English — in this case, Chinese).
The test is conducted entirely online through NAATI's dedicated testing platform. You use a headset with microphone to listen to audio dialogues and record your interpretations. There is no video component — the test is audio-only. You are allowed one free repetition per dialogue.

Scoring System
The CCL uses a deduction-based scoring system. You start with full marks — 45 per dialogue, 90 total — and marks are subtracted for every error. There are no bonus points for performing well; your goal is to preserve your starting score through accurate, complete interpretation.
To pass, you need 63 out of 90 overall AND at least 29 out of 45 in each individual dialogue. Deductions are triggered by omissions, additions, inaccuracies, wrong register, and excessive repetition requests. See our scoring FAQ for detailed breakdowns.

How to Book
Book your CCL test through your myNAATI account at naati.com.au. The process takes a few days from application to booking:
- Create or log in to your myNAATI account
- Submit a CCL application and upload identity documents
- Wait for email approval (typically a few business days)
- Log back in, select an available test slot, and pay AUD $814
- Complete the mandatory online system/equipment check before test day
The test fee is AUD $814 in 2026, paid in full at booking. No retake discounts apply — if you fail, you pay the full fee again. Check our FAQ for refund and rescheduling policies.

How to Prepare
Most coaching experts recommend at least 2–3 months of structured preparation before sitting the CCL test. This time is needed to develop interpreting technique, build topic-specific vocabulary (healthcare, legal, social services), and practice with mock dialogues under timed conditions.
You need a desktop or laptop computer (tablets and phones are not permitted), a headset with a built-in microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet private room. NAATI requires a mandatory technical system check before test day.
Candidates who rely purely on bilingual ability without formal preparation have a significantly higher fail rate. Regular practice with realistic dialogues is the single most effective preparation method.

Common Mistakes
These are the most common misconceptions that cause test-takers to fail or feel confused. Separate myth from fact before you sit the test.
The test assesses community-level interpreting accuracy, not just language fluency. Omitting even minor details deducts marks. Many native speakers fail without structured preparation.

The pass mark is 63 out of 90 total AND at least 29 out of 45 in each individual dialogue. Failing one dialogue fails the entire test, even if your total exceeds 63.
及格线为总分 90 分中的 63 分，且每段对话 45 分中至少 29 分。即使总分超过 63 分，只要在任意一段对话中未达到要求，整个考试仍属不及格。
You get only 1 free repeat per dialogue. Additional repetition requests are penalised and signal poor listening skills to the assessor.

The CCL is spoken consecutive interpreting, not written translation. You listen to audio segments and speak your interpretation aloud — there is no reading or writing involved in the test itself.

Notes are encouraged, especially for numbers, names, and technical terms. However, writing full sentences causes you to miss audio, which leads to omission deductions.

Results issued after 9 August 2022 are valid for 5 years. Older results had only 3-year validity and cannot be extended — you must resit the test.

After the Test
NAATI CCL results are typically released within 4–6 weeks from the date of the test. Results are sent to the email address on your myNAATI account and also appear in your account portal. If you pass, you receive a formal credential letter which you use to claim your 5 PR points through SkillSelect.
Results issued after 9 August 2022 are valid for 5 years. If you fail, there is no mandatory waiting period — you can rebook as soon as a slot becomes available, but you must pay the full $814 again. Most coaches advise waiting 6–8 weeks and completing structured preparation before retesting. NAATI also offers a formal result review service if you believe there was a scoring error.
